The Fretts on Film Interview: Rose Byrne on “Bridesmaids 2,” Ryan Gosling and Her “Girl-Crush”
Rose Byrne may be wrapping her run as attorney Ellen Parsons on DirecTV’s sensationally entertaining Damages, but will she be walking down the aisle again soon for Bridesmaids 2? “I’d love to do it, but I don’t think it’s going to happen,” the Aussie-born actress told me at the Damages premiere’s after-party in the Oak Room of New York City’s Plaza Hotel last night. “Kristen [Wiig] doesn’t want to do it. She doesn’t want to taint the original, and I respect her for that.”
That feeling isn’t shared by everyone in the movie industry. “She caught a lot of flak for that decision in Hollywood, and I think it’s because she’s a woman,” says Byrne. “The attitude is like, ‘You’re a woman, and you’re almost 40–you should be fucking grateful!’ I don’t thnk they would say something like that if it were Ben Stiller.”
Still, Byrne’s keeping busy with roles in other films. She just wrapped I Give It a Year, a British indie romantic comedy about a newlywed couple, directed by frequent Sacha Baron Cohen cohort Dan Mazer and costarring Simon Baker and Anna Faris. “I love Anna,” says Byrne. “I have such a girl-crush on her.”
She also worked with a couple of other frequent crush objects–Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper–in The Place Beyond the Pines, the new thriller from Derek Cianfrance, director of Gosling’s Blue Valentine. “I’m only in one scene, for about two minutes,” she says. “But I got to work with Ryan and Bradley, so that was fun.” With men like these, who needs Bridesmaids?
